Maybe u already forgot who I might b and have ignored my entreaty to plz spend a few minutes betting acquainted (i.e., by talking soon my ID on yahoo is johnwhaskins and cell phone is 301-717-3259) I was only trying to facilitate that process -- or get to the understanding that such as not ur intent in the first place.
If you want to know me, a short look at my CV will tell u the basics quick. It’s at my web page, http://www.linkedin.com/in/johnwhaskins. But, if u want 2 "really" know me then, my I plz start by introducing myself. I grew up in Manhattan (NYC) & spent the first 27 years of my professional life on Wall St. I practiced international corporate and securities law and then managed my family’s investment bank. My “first life,” so to speak was rewarding in all the conventional, traditional senses.
I had graduated Dartmouth and then did my first 3 post grad degrees at Columbia University – Law, MBA & a Masters in Int'l Aff's. Then, after an Int'l Fellowship in DC, I returned to NYC & did my time on downtown on Wall Street. But, the money & toys notwithstanding, that life definitely had its shortcomings.
So, I dropped that and sought instead to make my amends. I switched over to “the other side” doing very different things in the hope of finally making a difference. In other words, for my “second” life, I have been giving something back. For the past decade, I’ve been teaching (at night) and working in nonprofits, as a business manager and a direct provider of client services, both social and clinical (My day job). Along the way, I took a Masters in Social Work and became licensed as a psychotherapist.
That wasn't just for kicks -- seriously, I really did put the degree and the license to work – attending to the needs of the (literally) poorest of the poor, the homeless. Many of whom have mental disabilities as well as chronic addiction to drugs and/or alcohol.
While doing that at my day job, I was teaching nonprofit management and psychology courses at night, both at the Univ of Miami and at FIU. In 2000, I returned “home” (i.e., here to the NE). I’ve been teaching and working with nonprofits.
Only recently, I became a full-time academic teaching MBA and EMBA candidates what little knowledge I’ve picked up over the years as a practitioner of both internal corporate finance and investment banking.
In the process I became the Director of the Executive MBA program at the Univ of Maryland UMUC. I held that post until I went back to china in the spring of 2008 to teach finance and political economics at the Shanghai Univ of Finance & Economics.
In my down time, I have been volunteering to continue to work with the most needy, especially alcoholics and addicts.
In early June, I returned (to Rockville MD) on summer break. To be perfectly candid, what comes next for me is still undecided. I will try to be wherever the Lord wants me to be and do my best there until I eventually go into full retirement.
That’s enough about me. Now it's ur turn 2 tell me about u -- ok? Please let me know whatever u think I should know in order 2 know and understand u better.
U can reach me by e-mail: j.w.haskins AT comcast.net. Also, my Yahoo IM is johnwhaskins. It is my sincerest hope that, in the coming weeks ahead, we will get to know each other as friends invariably do. And, who knows, perhaps one day, we might even be able to meet in person to say “Hello” face-to-face.
Who knows?
As always, Your new friend, John
